About Us

We are a true community orchestra, so we aim never to turn anyone away, or to have limits on the number of instruments in any section.  String players are always welcome – we are particularly keen at the moment to recruit cellists – and could do with bass trombone and tuba players.

We do not require any particular grades, just a reasonable knowledge of the instrument and a willingness to join in and make music with others. The music we play is normally chosen and, where necessary, specially adapted to suit our line-up at the time.

All the usual orchestral instruments are represented, as well as brass band instruments and saxophones.  (Suitably transposed parts are  provided.)

We currently have over 70 members, with typically 40 or more playing each week.

Giving concerts is not our primary purpose, though we do aim to give our members concert experience. On the last day of each term we normally play a selection of the music we have been rehearsing. This concert takes place in our usual rehearsal venue (St Nicholas Church, 7.30 pm) and everyone is welcome to come and listen. There are no tickets (admission is free), but there is a retiring collection in aid of the charity we have chosen for the term. Refreshments are usually served at the end, giving an opportunity to meet and talk to members of the orchestra.
